You can make the holidays brighter for families whose lives have been affected by domestic violence! Join the countless individuals and community groups who donate gifts to AWAIC each holiday season for local families to enjoy a more joyful holiday.
Changes this year:
- Due to construction, we will not be accepting holiday gifts at the AWAIC shelter. Please drop off all holiday donations at 1577 C Street, Suite 201 between 10am and 5pm, Monday through Friday. The office is on the second floor to the right of the elevator.
- We will be collecting donations through Monday, December 16. This will make sure we can get the gifts to families who have left shelter and moved into their own places.
- Instead of selecting gifts for children, AWAIC empowers women to choose gifts they know their family will love. We ask that all holiday gift donations are NEW, UNWRAPPED, and UNPACKAGED (not in gift bags or boxes).
- To coordinate gift drop off or if you have questions, please contact Alyssa at (907) 743-5717 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Brrr…it’s cold out there! At this time of year, AWAIC always needs donations of new or gently used clothing to keep our participants warm in the winter. Check out the list of in-kind items we are currently accepting here. Organize a drive in your office or group to collect winter gear that will benefit our shelter residents all winter long!
The Gift of Choice
Sometimes the best gift we can give a shelter resident is the gift of choice! If violence hadn't interrupted their lives, shelter residents would be at their own home, trimming their tree, lighting their Menorah or engaging in their family's special traditions. For most people, that would also include shopping and choosing the perfect gift for their children and loved ones. Some suggestions for gift cards include Old Navy, Best Buy, Fred Meyer, Carrs, Walmart, or Target.
Holiday Food Drives
Get together with your colleagues, family, or friend group and collect all of the fixings for a fabulous holiday meal. Baking items (spices, flour, sugar), canned goods, prepackaged stuffing, produce, and commercial desserts are always welcome! We cannot accept any food that is expired or that was not prepared in a commercial kitchen.
To ensure that AWAIC's case managers and advocates have the resources to give each of the domestic violence survivors we serve individualized support, consider making a financial gift to AWAIC. One hundred percent of all donations stay in Anchorage and help fund AWAIC's 52-bed emergency safe shelter, 24-hour crisis line, and an array of supportive services to those who have been impacted by domestic violence.
