Awareness + Action = Change

Below is a list of events that will be taking place in our community during DVAM. Please take the time to attend and help spread awareness!

October 3rd: DVAM Opening Ceremonies
Time: 5:30pm to 7:30pm
Location: 49th State Brewing Company, 717 West 3rd Ave
Come together and say violence will no longer be accepted in our community. Free event. 

October 5th: Yoga with Deha Yoga
Time: 12pm to 1pm
Location: 11260 Old Seward Highway
Restore with Ashlee. A suggested $10 donation for this class or in-kind donation that will be given directly to AWAIC.

October 6th: DVAM Fun Run
Time: Begins at 7am
Location: Buckner Fitness Center, JBER
Proceeds benefit AWAIC. Contact: Jennifer Frysz 384-2999

October 6th: Yoga with with lululemon at Deha Yoga
Time: 6pm to 8pm
Location: 11260 Old Seward Highway
A suggested $10 donation for this class or in-kind donation that will be given directly to AWAIC.

October 7th: Charter College Health Fair
Time: 9:30am to 2:30pm
Location: 2221 E. Northern Lights Blvd

October 7th: Yoga with Deha Yoga
Time: 4pm to 6pm
Location: 11260 Old Seward Highway
Goddess Night. A suggested $10 donation for this class or in-kind donation that will be given directly to AWAIC.

October 10th: Southcentral Foundation Domestic Violence Awareness Kickoff 
Time: 12pm to 1pm
Location: Primary Care Center, 4320 Diplomacy Drive
Join Southcentral Foundation President/CEO Dr. Katherine Gottlieb, Family Wellness Warriors Initiative, and the Anchorage Police Department as we spread a message of "Breaking the Silence." Enjoy entertainment from the Princess Warriors; activities including I am a Warrior, and My Hands are for Protecting; and more! Time: 10am to 2pm
Location:  UAA Student Union

October 11th: Health Cares about Domestic Violence Day
Health care providers demonstrate that they are a safe person to speak with about domestic violence by hanging fliers, wearing pins, and providing DV resources.

October 12th: Yoga with Deha Yoga
Time: 12pm to 1pm
Location: 11260 Old Seward Highway
Core Connection with Jen. A suggested $10 donation for this class or in-kind donation that will be given directly to AWAIC.

October 13th: Clothing Swap
Time: 6:30pm tp 8:30pm
Location: Arctic Oasis Comm. Center, JBER

October 14th: Mexican Consulate Health Fair
Time: 9am to 1pm
Location: Northway Mall

October 16th - 18th: Statewide Elders and Youth Conference
Time: 8am to 12pm
Location: Dena’ina Center

October 19th: Credit Union 1 Health Fair
Time: 7:30am to 10:30am
Location: Credit Union 1, 1941 Abbott Road

October 19th - 21st: Alaska Federation of Natives Convention
Time: 7:45am to 6:30pm
Location: Dena’ina Center

October 20th: Stand Down for Vets
Time: 8:30am to 2pm
Location: North Terminal at Ted Stevens International Airport
To provide veterans in need with all types of assistance. 

October 20th: Dine for a Cause
Location: Arctic Roadrunner
Enjoy a great meal for a great cause!

Ladder of Light Chakra Practice and Gong Bath with Megan. A suggested $10 donation for this class or in-kind donation that will be given directly to AWAIC.

October 23rd: “In Her Shoes” Training
Time: 2:30pm to 3:30pm
Location: CITC
An educational & interactive training to connect participants to the day-to-day reality for women experiencing violence: and to deepen our empathy and compel us to take ACTION. Please RSVP to Nicole at nicole_s@awaic.org. 

October 25th: Escalation Workshop at UAA
Time: 6pm to 9pm
Location: UAA Commons
Movie and discussion illuminating the warning signs of an abusive relationship.

October 30th: Shed the Light
Time: 12pm to 1pm
Location: 725 West 9th Ave, First United Methodist Church
With the intention of spreading light and healing in the face of darkness and violence, AWAIC is hosting a gathering and march that starts and ends at the First United Methodist Church. Please RSVP to Nicole at nicole_s@awaic.org.

November 4th: Silent Nights, Starry Nights Gala
Time: 6pm
Location: The Center
Join us for AWAIC’s annual gala and get out your best “Alaska formal” attire! From flannels to fancy dresses, or Xtratufs to extra high heels - “Alaska formal” is defined by you!

Month Long Events: 
Contest for teens! Ages 13-17. The challenge is to create a logo for Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month in February. Enter by posting the logo to Instagram and tagging @awaic or #ruawaic. Contest ends on October 31st. Prizes from Zumiez, Blaines Art Supply, AK Starfish and iHip.

Caffe D’arte will be displaying art work created by AWAIC participants all month long. This art is an important part of many survivors healing process. Please come check it out at 223 E Dimond Blvd and show your support for AWAIC!
