Children that have witnessed violence in the home are at higher risk of suffering from depression, anxiety disorders and learning difficulties, and can face serious challenges as they enter adulthood that can include continuing the cycle of violence.
The Children’s Program at AWAIC addresses the special needs of this group. It also provides an Empowerment for Mothers group and coordinates with the Anchorage School District’s Child in Transition Program to ensure that school attendance is maintained. This collaboration provides the much needed stability these children need, creating a sense of normality for their family’s emotional health and healing.
AWAIC has staff specially trained to help children understand what they have seen and help them gain strength. AWAIC provides a stable environment, with play areas for each age group, an outdoor playground, support and education groups and arranged transportation to schools.
